MORIA:

Hi Everybody.
-------------

First of all a little rip from the manual:

"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
The Dungeons of MORIA U moria COPYRIGHT (c) Robert Alan Koeneke

1. DISCLAIMER

Moria is intended for Public Domain, and may not be sold or
marketed in any form without the permission and written consent from the
author Robert Alan Koeneke. I retain all copyrights to this program, in
either the original or modified forms, and no violation, deletion, or
change of the copyright notice is allowed. Furthermore, I will have no
liability or responsibility to any user with respect to loss or damage
caused directly or indirectly by this program.

2. MORIA Instructions

The game of MORIA is a single player dungeon simulation. A player
may choose from a number of races and classes when creating their
character, and then 'run' that character over a period of days, weeks,
even months; attempting to win the game by defeating the Balrog which
lurks in the deeper levels.

The player will begin his adventure on the town level where he may
acquire supplies, weapons, armor, and magical devices by bartering with
various shop owners. After preparing for his adventure, the player can
descend into the dungeons of MORIA where fantastic adventures await his
coming!

Before beginning your first adventure, you should read this
document carefully. The game of MORIA is a complicated game, and will
require a dedicated player to win.

2.1. The Character

All characters have six main attributes which modify their basic
abilities. These six attributes, called stats, are strength,
intelligence, wisdom, dexterity, constitution, and charisma. Stats may
vary from 3 as a minimum to 18/100 as a maximum. Because adventurers of
interest tend to be better than average characters, MORIA stats will
average about 12.5, and are further adjusted by race and class. Some
races are just naturally better at being certain classes, as will be
shown later.

In addition to the more visible stats, each character has certain
abilities which are mainly determined by his race and class, but are
also modified by his stats. The abilities are fighting, throwing/bows,
saving throw, stealth, disarming, magical devices, perception,
searching, and infra-vision.

Characters will be assigned an early history, with money and a
social class based on that history. Starting money is assigned based on
history, charisma, and somewhat upon the average of a character's stats.
A character with below average stats will receive extra money to help
him survive the first adventure.

Each character will also have physical attributes such as race,

height, weight, sex, and physical description. None of these, except
weight, play any part in the game other than to give the player a
``feeling'' for his character. Weight is used for computing carrying
capacity and also for bashing.

Finally each character is assigned hit points based on his race,
class, and constitution. Spell casters will also receive mana which is
expended when casting spells. Mana is based on wisdom for priests and
intelligence for mages.

\ MY TEST: /

During the last two months or so I have played an outstanding
and addictive game called - The Dungeons of MORIA.
This is with no doubt one of the best RPG games around.
First of all the bad thing... The graphics. Which graphics?
There's no graphics at all. All people, walls monsters etc is
displayed with characters.
And now the great thing... This is public domain (!!!!).
Yes, you did read correctly, this game is a so called Public
Domain program which means that you may freely copy and spread
the game.

After reading the BIG docuentation i realized that this game
has a long history. Actually the ST-version is converted from
a minicomputer. The game it self is huge !
Amazing...

First of all you have to choose race. Chose between Elf,Halfelv
human,halv-troll,gnome, orc, half-orc or halfing.
The program then random displays some data about the person.
Just press space to get new random numbers.
The character itself has some important numbers for strenght,
intelligence, wisdom and so on...
if you choose be a magican (mage) you should have pretty good
intelligence to become a sucessful character and so on...

You start playing at the town level where you can buy equipment
in the local shops. It's possible to buy everything from
elementar articles such as food and torches to more heavy things
such as scrolls, potions, magical devices, armory and weapons.
When you start the game you are a real novice. But you can improve
your character a great deal. Every time you enter a new level (
occurs when your experience points has incremented some percent)
you will (as a magican) learn a new spell!. priest will learn new
prayers and so on... When your charcter is well equiped get ready
and enter the dungeons! Lit a torch and slowly advance in the maze
of dungeons... This is real exciting (belive me or not) while only
a little area around you are light. Careless people may bump into
some terryfing monster and quickly be killed by it.
The number of monsters is huge, from small mushrooms to giant
mulithued dragons (he!)(which will envelope you in flames!(Kill!))

Conclusion. This is just great! Copy it today... It's free !
Graphics 0% -
Sound 0% -
Playability 95%
Value for money 100% (!)
"Timevalue" 100%
Overall 85 %

I just had some problems... (some?)
*First of all my original disk was very "low" formatted...
When i first tried to save the game I was out of diskspace
Well, the program didn't tell me and everything worked on...
It took countless hours(?) to find out why the savefile
 was erronous...
*Two. The program always kills the savefil. I have designed a
good system with autobooting ramdisk and Auto backup...
*Three. The program sometimes just dont work when loaded. This
occurs, let's say, 50 % of the times loaded (!) Just boot
again. See also the point above and realize that i did hate
this f-n autokill in the beginning (before ramdisk and so...)
(The program just stops after a few rounds...)

ENJOY ALL THOSE MARVELLOUS PUBLIC DOMAIN PROGRAMS !
